From the global climate strikes to the UK’s pledge to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, this year has seen significant developments in the fight against the climate crisis. This momentum will undoubtably have a huge impact on the construction industry, particularly when it comes to upgrading the energy efficiency of our existing building stock.

Insulated panels are a popular solution for roof refurbishment due to their high thermal performance, in addition to their easy installation process. However, their industrial finish often means they aren’t suitable for more conventional, residential-style buildings. Modern insulated tile support systems offer a new approach to vernacular roofs, combining the benefits of insulated panels with the aesthetics of tiles or slate.

Application

Like a typical insulated panel solution, panelised tile support systems incorporate a metal façade, insulation and weather sheet into a single component. These are fitted together with factory-engineered jointing and screwed directly to the purlins, reducing time working at height and creating a fully insulated and weathertight roof cover.

This provides a strong and sturdy base for a tile fixing system. The latest innovations in these systems feature battens and link channels made from high quality treated steel, rather than timber which can rot and warp. These are installed over the insulated panels with specially-designed fixing screws, creating an interlocking grid.

The tiles or slates, and even integrated solar PV panels, can then be slotted into place and secured by stainless steel clips. This simple yet durable fixing method is less labour intensive than a traditional slate or tile installation and does not need to be done by a specialist slating contractor. Additionally, the lightweight solution reduces both the depth of the build-up and resource requirements, using 50% less slates than traditional systems. Before beginning the installation, it is important to check that the roof pitch is suitable for the slate or tile system being used.

The staged installation approach facilitated by the tile support system also helps to reduce pressure on projects where the roof refurbishment is interrupted by bad weather or unforeseen scheduling issues. Time is key for refurbishments; occupiers can be displaced whilst the work is going on, or landlords can be keen for a quick turnaround so they can let the building. Once the insulated panel roof is completed and the building is made weathertight, internal trades can begin, leaving the tiles to be fitted later in the construction timeline. Additionally, entire solutions can be supplied with comprehensive warranties, covering both the structural and thermal performance.

New approach

Balancing the need for more efficient buildings with the desire to retain the traditional, familiar look of traditional construction methods is a key challenge for refurbishment contractors. However, panelised tile support systems allow both boxes to be ticked, enabling installers to quickly achieve a high-performance roof system with a conventional tiled finish.
