2nd June, London – UK SPIE Building Services Northern has completed a conversion and refurbishment project at the University of Bradford. The independent European leader in electrical and mechanical engineering and HVAC services was tasked with updating and improving existing staff offices and teaching spaces within the Pemberton Building at the university’s City Campus.
The two and a half month development, starting in October, was the latest in a line of projects awarded to SPIE by the University of Bradford in 2014. The work included alterations to existing non-load bearing partitions to create a new open plan office and student reception area.
Peter McCluskey, Project Manager at University of Bradford comments: “The core value of our university is ‘Making Knowledge Work’. For this to be true we need to ensure our facilities meet the same level of quality as our teaching as well as undertaking construction projects in a sustainable manner. In the last few years we’ve invested heavily in the development of our two main campuses, and transformed them into sustainable oasis’s in Bradford. The Pemberton refurbishment is part of this. We’ve employed SPIE for a number of campus projects and were satisfied that they could complete the latest renovations to our exacting standards.”
In addition the building’s remaining offices and meeting spaces were refurbished. The undertaking included wall, ceiling and floor finishes, mechanical and electrical works and above ground drainage installations.

The 2,374m2 Pemberton Building was erected in the late 1980s as part of the extension of the university’s main campus. Sitting alongside the adjacent Ashfield Building in order to provide additional office and teaching space for the University, the building accommodates the school’s Faculty of Social Sciences. Other structures completed at this time were the university Library, Computer Centre and Communal Building.
